Finding Passion

I guess being the eternal optimist I am always finding the good in all things. I've realized along the way that when things change or when I am disappointed I may not feel sad for very long. But boy it's taken a long time to get to this point and in the past I could have easily been the queen of holding grudges. At least I know I've changed.

Yesterday we had planned to go to a show with one of our favorite bands ever The Parson Red Heads, to our dismay it was canceled and it was our very first canceled show. I've seen about 60 shows and my husband has seen 95 shows (we keep a excel spreadsheet, that's how serious our music addiction is) and I guess we were due for this to happen, but plans had changed none the less.

I guess the whole point of this blog is that yesterday's canceled show ignited something in me that showed me why I own my business. I found my entrepreneurial spirit still lives in me. Sometimes when I think it's gone or when it's sleeping, it creeps back in unexpected ways and it's exhilarating when it comes back. And yesterday it definitely came back in full force.

Here's what happened. I was so determined to see The Parson Red Heads play that I emailed the venue and asked them to let them play, after they had expressed an interest in going on with the show after the headliner canceled their set and the promoter canceled the whole show altogether. I was fueled by sheer determination, facebooking and tweeting and trying to get other people riled up for this cause that I totally forgot that I knew nothing about how these shows get set up, but I tried to help the cause anyway even if it pestered a few people.

I can laugh about it today, because I obviously know nothing about the music industry as far as what channels people go through and as fruitless as my efforts were yesterday the good that came out of it is that I was able to realize why I work full-time for myself, why I started my own company and why I do what I do.

It's because I have a passion for creating, a passion for making gowns from my own mind, being able to build something tangible and real from just a concept and being fueled by something as simple as a flicker or a small spark.

So, to all those people I bothered yesterday, I publicly apologize for my pestering behavior and know that I love the venue even more and one of my favorite bands has moved up to all-time favorite bands. : )

Just being happy

I am taking the time to post while I still have a teeny bit of time before it gets super duper crazy busy. I don't really want to use that saying "it's the calm before the storm," simply because the storm ahead for me are a ton of blessings.

I've worked hard to try to make this fashion dream come true and I'm getting all choked up just writing this. Just picture Miss America when they announce that she is a winner, she is normally poised and controlled. Then she realizes that all the work she has put into making her body look good, all the times she practiced saying the right things and all the times she missed out on eating cheesecake because she can't risk being chubbier than her competitors.

I feel this moment for me is finally coming and at least any doubt that I had about working in the fashion industry is simply gone. I am a fashion designer, I don't work part-time for anyone else. I have my own company, I work full-time for myself and the name my parents gave me will soon be a big brand name in bridal.

I built this from ground up and knowing at a young age that being a fashion designer was one of the biggest dreams I would ever have has helped me take steps each year towards one big dream.

Thank you to my apprentice Heidi who has helped me feel less stressed out about all these orders coming in. Thanks for helping my business grow!

Thank you to my loving and supportive family and most of all the love my life for being there to help me cope with the rough starts, the tough times and for the daily smiles and laughs. MWA!

A post for love

(My hubby and I recently celebrated 10 years of being together, so we went back to the very first road side attraction we know and love)

I recently got the most remarkable message from a stranger who read my blog about my dream and how young I was when I met my husband. This message remarked about supporting his girlfriend in her dreams of fashion and how important it was to her to follow her dreams.

It reminded me a lot of how I went to Colorado Springs with my then boyfriend and now my husband of 10 years (8 years of marriage). When we first moved, he was worried about me giving up my life to be with him and how he thought the move can make us or break us. Obviously, it made us.

I told him in the beginning that I can create anywhere and that if money were ever tight, all I had to do was sell wedding gowns. I couldn't imagine my life without my husband and my design career would not have flourished without his support.

When you have had a dream long enough, it will always stick with you. Luckily, I had several dreams and the only one I thought would never come true actually did when I found the love my life. After that dream came true, the rest fell into place.

Naming Rights

I finally updated my website with some of my real brides (the ones who gave me permission to post their pictures)and you will notice that each gown has a name. As my new apprentice and I work to sew and design gowns, we have decided to take inspiration from my past brides.

In the next few months, we will be producing a line inspired by my past brides and using inspiration from these brides when we go to market next year. For my past brides reading this, not to worry we are using your dress as inspiration and not exactly re-creating the dress you have.

You will still have your original one-of-a-kind Jennyvi gown and we will be taking our favorite elements / concepts from your dress and creating a new version. The great part about designing a line from brides is that naming the gown is quite easy.

My goal is to have as many different brides to make gowns for, so I can have more gowns / gown names in the line.

My New York Fashion Week Dream

There are only a few occasions when I want to stay in bed all day. My poor husband can attest to this, since I have been with him for over 10 years (I met him when I was 20)he has to regularly tell me not to wake him up early. I absolutely cannot help when I wake up and when I wake up a little company would be nice. Lol.

Anyways, back to my New York Fashion Week dream, when I woke up this morning I awoke to flashbacks of the most glorious dream I ever had. I hope this one comes true for sure.

My dream starts off with me in a car that my husband is driving, he stayed in my dream long enough just to drop me off in front of the venue where one of the New York Fashion Week events was happening. I hopped out of the car (it was a very nice dark fancy-ish car) to help a guy in front of a truck with loads of clothes on rolling racks.

I grabbed one and headed towards the doors. As I was walking with the clothes, I noticed thousands of people lined up in front on the red carpet waiting to get in. Flashes of lights going off every second. When arrived at the door, the doorman asked me a fashion question that I had to answer with the incorrect answer (the fashion codeword to get in). He let me in (he looked like Andre Leon Talley).

As I passed the bright white runway, I just thought how long it was and how scary it was to be a model walking down the whole length. When I arrived backstage there were corridors of model changing stations with clothes organized and shoes and people everywhere. I put away the first rack and suddenly my dreamed skipped to the 2nd rack, where these 2 girls were showing me the order. Then fear struck inside, I lightly got lipstick on the white / red check bodice, but no one was concerned and didn't say anything. Ah relief, then my dream was happy again.

My last rack to put away was for the kids runway set. The kids runway set was fun, I organized the clothes and they were so tiny and cute. Then suddenly I saw the cutest thing ever. Care Bears hanging from hangers to match the kids clothes.

Then, alas, my dream ended. Never had I wanted to go back to sleep to continue my dream. Maybe one day soon, my dream will continue in real life.

Project Ethos Media Watch

First, I have to thank all the people I met involved with Project Ethos. I am very impressed with how well run their organization is and how much work they put into each show. I was there all day doing what I do best and observing my surroundings, just soaking it all in.

This event was a little different for me, as much as I want to stick with the bridal industry, I realize that I am so much more than a bridal gown designer. With this show, I really had fun with my vitaminwater zero design for my flavor "go go." When I was designing my piece, I regained the love I have for color and fun with textiles.

In the end, I didn't win the competition. The winner was based on live text voting and my understanding that this was not my usual target market helped me let go of any animosity towards any of my competitors. I had realized with this show that whatever happens I was going to end up saying how fun the night was and I did.

Some Pleasant Surprises

Well, it's quite funny how life goes sometimes. Earlier last month I vowed to make 3 gowns a week, but my business started picking up, I am doing 3 shows for the month of May and I've gone to many business seminars.

I guess good intentions can sometimes be thwarted by better opportunities. I still intend to work hard on making 3 gowns a week, but I feel that my brides deserve my full undivided attention as well as the design competition I have been selected for.

For now, I am enjoying my busy schedule, I think it may be a sign that all my hard work is paying off. Goes to show that when you keep putting 110% for what really matters it will be worth all the hard work you put in.

Here is an update from the gown below, I had time to bead it before I got busy. I have been updating my facebook fan page "Gown Whisperer," check out the post and the new pics.

My own Project Runway challenge

In a way, I'm glad I wasn't cast for Project Runway. I tried out 3 times for Seasons 1, 3 and 4 and I was sad, but I cam home each time motivated to prove Tim Gunn and his people wrong about my designs. That and I always wanted to be recognized for my designs first and if I did cast, it would be like "oh you're the girl who was on PR Season whatever."

Honestly, I would miss my husband and my doggy too much to be away for too long. The good thing is that PR provided me with real criticisms that I was able to improve upon and give my designs a hard look. I think this provided me a good solid base to build my business from and I think it has worked.

I learned, if you are not where you want to be, change your mind set and change your situation. 2011 is my 3rd year of being self-employed on a full-time basis. When I first started, I was scared of leaving a stable income to do this on my own. Just in the last few months, I've had to be harsh on myself, look at my business from every angle and decide what more can I sacrifice or what more can I do. If it means having less of a social life so be it, it's better than the alternative of failing or being bored at home with nothing to do.

I think all my hard work is starting to pay off finally. I have been busy the last 4 months with my brides, fashion projects and preparing for some runway shows. I think I work better when it's complete madness and I have always said that I never wanted to live life bored. So here goes the social life until I am where I need to be.

For the next 5 weeks (I think that's roughly how long a season is) I'm going to complete 3 looks a week. I will post the gowns I am working on, so stay tuned. Since I am doing runway shows with Russian, Couture for Cancer and Retro Inspired themes, you will be seeing a lot of influences from those genres.

Writing a Business Plan for Fashion Part 1

Part 1 is all about the first set of questions fashion designers should ask themselves, it's part of the "Business Segment" of a business plan.

With more and more people wanting to be fashion designers, how does one stand out? There is more to being a fashion designer than just great designs. Being in the business of fashion, means you have to be on top of your game creatively while keeping a close eye on your operations and expenses. After all the last thing any designer wants is to look like a starving artist or have the most trendsetting designs without a way to produce them.

In this highly competitive industry the fashion designers who can arm themselves with a solid business plan are the fashionistas who will outlast their competition. If you have a flair for design and want to start your own fashion line, start by asking yourself these questions below.

1. What type of line are you planning?

In this question identify if you will be designing ready-to-wear, sportswear, business casual, formal and evening wear or bridal. If you design a range of clothing identify and focus on the clothing you design the most. This will be hard for some, but the more you focus on one genre the more likely you can grow your business to the point when you can start making money and designing other types of clothing.

2. What kind of clothing will you sell?

Identify if you will be designing upscale, high-end, men’s, women’s, children’s, separates, t-shirts, shorts, evening gowns and etc. Again, if you design a range of clothing choose the items that will be the best seller of your line and prioritize from there. For example, my main source of income is from making high quality bridal gowns, but I do also make bridesmaids gowns when the bride requests them. Although, I do make bridesmaids gowns, I still choose to primarily market my company to brides and stores to try to sell my wedding gowns.

3. What kind of opportunity is it?

This is where you ask yourself how much time you’re going to devote and if this is a new start-up or something you are expanding. Will you start off working on your business part-time and then ease into making it a full-time career? Or have you already quit your day job to work to try to make your company from a local one to a national one?

4. Why will your line succeed?

This is the most important question to ask and often times the most difficult one to answer. Start by thinking about what you have already accomplished and what you hope to expect to gain from owning your own fashion business.

Example: My line will succeed because my designs are unique and original to the bridal industry, but appeals to many different brides. (Your answer should be at least several paragraphs).

In part 1 of “The Business of Fashion,” you were asked the first four questions of your business plan. While you analyze your fashion line, remember that you are only half done. If you are starting up your company, you also have to ask the same questions for the business side as well. Let’s recap the first four questions again, but in this section think about the business end of things.

1.) What type of business are you planning?

For this question, it can be a simple answer like “a new trendy ready-to-wear line based out of Phoenix, Arizona.”

2.) What kind of clothing / services will you provide?

From a business perspective is there something you can offer to your clients or stores that will make you more sellable? If you are just selling in stores, maybe you can offer custom pieces or offer the stores you’re in free alterations on your clothing. You have to think of added value to your customers, so that in any economy you can stand out and continue to succeed.

3.) What kind of opportunity is it? (Same example from "The Business of Fashion: Part 1")

This is where you ask yourself how much time you’re going to devote and if this is a new start-up or something you are expanding. Will you start off working on your business part-time and then ease into making it a full-time career? Or have you already quit your day job to work to try to make you company from a local one to a national one?

4.) How will your company succeed?

Now that you have thought about how your designs will succeed, how will your overall company succeed? Are you doing something unique with your business model? Are you using only local vendors that operate in Phoenix or doing a lot of community events for local awareness? As a business owner and fashion designer, you have to be active in getting both your designs and your name out there.

5.) How will you grow your business?

In business, it is crucial to constantly think about making your company bigger. If you are selling your designs now, think about to whom you are selling them to and ask yourself how you can sell to more people. Are you only selling your clothing on a custom basis for now, but can maybe start listing dresses on Etsy or know several stores you can sell to?

6.) How are your designs unique?

I learned early on from my days of trying out for Project Runway (tried out for season 1, 2, 4), that people who don’t make clothes but have an interest for fashion always want a story. People love hearing about what made you think of designing this or that, but they don’t want to hear the obvious. I use to think that I didn’t have a story, but in reality I just never thought about it. I think it was mainly because when I design, the concepts mainly come to me in dreams and sleep. The more I thought about what led me to that design, the more I realized that my dreams did tell a story if I probed my mind long enough. You may have to do the same thing to be able to answer this question.

Now that you have asked yourself the first 6 questions of a business plan, it’s important to keep going. We have now completed the “Business Segment” and our next section is the “Marketing Segment.” Through your writing analyze all the possibilities, write it down and visualize the end result. This is only the first step for you to becoming that rich and famous fashion designer, the next challenge is to keep up the success.

Epiphany of a Fashion Designer

Since the year began, I have been driven to change my work habits and work on things that I should have a long time ago. One of those things I should have worked on is updating the good ole business plan. As I revisit each question business owners should be asking themselves, I'm thinking "how does this help my current fashion goal?"

So, I'm taking my old business plan which has essential business plan concepts and making it work for the fashion industry. I've researched fashion design business plans before and I'm either so lost on the legal verbiage written in them that my vision is blurred or I'm simply bored. Some are better than others, but most of them are already written in business plan format or they talk about how to get hired as a fashion designer and not starting your own line. None the less, I'm always left thinking "what are the questions fashion designers should be asking?"

When I was in school, I will have to admit I was a huge nerd (and not going to lie that I still am). I'm not afraid to say that especially when school taught me how my mind works and how I would break down my assignments to gain more perspective on my fashion design goals. When I think of my nerdy personality I only hope to help other fashion designers with their own fashion goals with my new series.

Critical Thinking

For the last few weeks I have been evaluating my circumstances in life and trying to map out my future. I realize that to get to the future that sometimes we need to look at our past and draw inspiration from it. I never really blogged about where I come from and how proud I am to be here. So, I guess better late than never.

I was born in the Philippines to a very hard working family. My father was the oldest out of ten children and my mother was the youngest out nine. They both worked hard in high school to get a college scholarship, while balancing jobs to help out their families. I'm happy to say that I am who I am because I grew up with many of my aunts and uncles taking care of me or living under the same roof. I had a sense of security, knowing that there was always going to be someone there to love me and take care of me.

Finally, my dad landed a job computing data for an airline and after traveling to many countries and living in some exotic places we ended up here in Arizona. Everyday when I feel down or don't think my hard work is going anywhere, I look at what my parents and know that they worked hard to get here and it's just a matter of time before I become a success.

The sheer fact that I was even in this country was a success and then to find a loving, supportive husband was just icing on the cake. As I work towards my goals, I will always remember where I came from and how it will mold my future.

Handmade With Love Photo Shoot

I think the photography will speak for itself, but I would like to add how amazing the photographs can turn out with the right people involved. I am so blessed to have talented to work with!

Here is a little back story of the shoot, I had been crocheting up a storm in the last few months and had wanted to debut them for the holidays. Trevor Dayley and I had wanted to do a shoot together, but with both our busy schedules timing was just not in our favor. Until, I suppose the stars must have aligned and we happen to choose the perfect setting and the perfect day.

Below are several group pictures of my hand-crocheted pieces along with my gowns, all made with happiness and love, hehehe. I think you will most definitely agree the photographs are works of art, the make-up by Stephanie Nault is exquisite and the models Nina, Natalie and Lindsey are gorgeous.

Crochet Crazy

Since my sewing machine has been in the shop I have absolutely been crochet crazy and loving it! This is exactly what happens when I am itching to sew, but not able to. I don't mind it, even though I am missing my wonderful Viking 1100 sewing baby.

I have had that machine for about 7 years now and it's still going, although the repair shop said there were many worn out parts in it. And I totally believe it as much as I sew, my little guy has chugged along pretty much every day since I got it.

I suppose I can use my industrial Juki, but it's just not the same. So for now, I guess you will have to enjoy my crocheted creations like this one listed on my etsy.

Wave Rider

I don't know what has come over me, perhaps it's the home we moved into less than 2 weeks ago or maybe November provides the kind of weather that inspires me. Whatever the case maybe I am riding this wave as long as I can. When momentum hits me, I can't afford to lose the motivation to keep going and keep going strong.

I am loving life, loving the new digs, loving the people in my life and loving my fashion career even after all these years. I love being an artist and I only hope to put my craft skills until the day I die.

Alright, now that I put that out in the universe, back to crocheting.

Handmade with Love

Love is in the air not only for life, but for crochet. I always had an interest for making lace and in high school I tried to teach myself, but I just didn't get the technique down. I tried making bobbin style lace and got so confused that I donated the book and the supplies that came with it.

It was only until I met my now mother-in-law that I finally got it. She has been a school teacher for over 30 years and the way she taught me how to crochet just came easily for her. And most importantly, it finally clicked for me. Since I learned the art of making lace by crochet 9 and a half years ago it has been incorporated in many of my events, including my wedding.

My own mother made crocheted doilies and wrapped them around candles as reception gifts for our wedding and my mother-in-law crocheted her own blouse that went over a turtle neck. I truly believe that all of us girls have bonded over our love of creating handmade gifts. Here are a few that I have made, including my newest collar for a new line called "Handmade with Love" and a picture of my little sister using a bag my mom crocheted out of plastic grocery bags. Talk about being sustainable : ).

My Vote For List

I know a lot of people get "vote for" requests for many different things, but sometimes I think we all have to break down and do it for someone we love. All though there are many categories and nominees to choose from in the "Best of Our Valley" contest here are a few that I support.

Angela Johnson (Click here to vote)- She has been one of my oldest fashionista friends since I met her way back when in 2003. I had just moved from Colorado Springs, I started design school and I was calling many outlets like stores, dance troops, opera houses, and countless others trying to get my line exposure with little success. Then I had met Angela and she coordinated many of the shows in Phoenix / Scottsdale and started including me. I didn't mind the drive from Tucson, I was serious about making fashion my life and soon enough I was doing more and more in Phoenix that we ended moving there. She definitely helped me connect with many prominent people and helped me get my foot in the door.

Scottsdale Fashion Week (Click here to vote) - This is a great fashion week for designers wanting a challenge and I certainly feel motivated after participating in the Designer of the Year competition. It was great to see the support of each designer, but also get introduced to people with the same dreams and goals. Scottsdale Fashion Week is also great because it supports not only emerging designers but established ones, like Susan DiStaulo. She is the fantastic illustrator of the fashion figures seen at Scottsdale Fashion Square and on the SFW website. And without Angela Johnson, the DOTY competition wouldn't happen either.

Gabrielle Helms (Click here to vote) - Although I have only recently been able to use Gabrielle as a model, she has to be the most fashionable mom for sure. I knew of her for several years and she has been one of the biggest supporters of designers over the past few years.

Frances Vintage (Click here to vote) - This is one of my favorite stores to visit and perfect for me and my hubby. While my hubby is looking at records / music at Stinkweeds, I get to shop around in here knowing I can take my time without pressure to leave from the significant other.

Lillian Lottie Couture (click here to vote) - This is one of the stores I use to be a designer in. I love it because most of the jewelry is designed/ made by Jenny Pinto one of the store owners and the veils are designed/ made by Meghan Lawlor the other owner.

Paris Envy (Click here to vote) - I was trolling around Central Phoenix on one of my play days and their sign and mannequin outside called to me. I come in and instantly felt at home. The downstairs area has some Parisian vintage furniture, stationary, perfumes and decor in which I coveted everything. Then upstairs (Olive in Paris)was a nice treat for a fashion designer like me, I didn't expect to find clothing there and again wanted to have them all. The owners are friendly and very much in the know about the local scene, if anything it was great just to chat with them.

New and Improved

As much as I don't like stereotyping, drama and supporting gossip mills, it seems that the fashion industry sometimes can live up to that perception. The good thing about people talking about you behind your back, is that they are still getting your name out there. It's funny that my personal facebook page is filled with people who have added me, just to keep tabs on what I am doing even though they may not even like me or have not even met me.

When I was younger people not liking me would have been a big deal, but as I progressed as a matured adult, fashion designer and business person I know well enough to know that you have to pick your battles. I like to save my punches for important things like furthering my career, instead of getting caught up in drama that distracts me from my ultimate goal.

I may have too much faith in people to believe that these people who have made it clear that they do not want to work with me, "want nothing to do with my collection," believe what they hear even if they have never met me or have met me and still dislike me will realize that the time they spend talking bad about people is taking away from more productive things they could be doing.

So, to all the haters out there continue to hate and be left behind, while I continue to ignore you and keep moving forward.

A Win, Win

About a month ago, I found out that I was one of the finalist for Scottsdale Fashion Week Designer of the Year competition and decided that if I won I was going to donate my hair to Locks of Love. Although, I didn't win, I decided to donate anyways. I feel that I was lucky enough to even be in the competition and it was about time to donate again. The last time I donated was May of 2009 and it was such a great feeling to have short hair and do something nice for others since the blood banks can't take my blood for some reason.

My only regret is that I wish I had known about Locks of Love in high school or even college. I remember all those times when I went from waist length hair to shoulder length. Hopefully, the salon that cut my hair would have donated it on their own. : )

Designing Day to Day

I have been designing and running my company (companies) on a full-time basis for 2 years now and it never ceases to amaze me how busy it gets for me in the fall. It seems like once I hit my birth month (September), I come off of a some what slow summer and then have to run on maximum capacity until May.

It was worse when I was working in the accounting profession and working grueling tax seasons. I would come home exhausted, but had wedding gown orders to fill and sometimes wouldn't sleep or unfortunately get sick.

This season, I am making a vow to keep up my health my priority during my busy season and focus on being productive everyday. I know myself well enough to understand that when I get busy, I put all my time in my work even if it means pulling an all-nighter.

I'm not afraid to announce since I turned 30, things have become clearer to me. My body likes the routine of waking up between 6:30-7:30am every morning (including weekends). Exercising to get my work day going and sewing until bed-time. My dreams will no longer wait for things to happen, I have learned that as long as I have the day I will seize it and do what I have to do to be the rich and famous designer I was meant to be!

Slumber Party

During our photo shoot last week for my new Birthstone line, I was so stressed out that all I wanted to do was release stress. I had the grand idea of wanting to jump on the bed (like a monkey my animal sign on the Chinese Zodiac) and do a pillow fight with the models in my designs.

Boy I had fun and I now want to have a pillow fight with all my new lines coming up.

I remember sewing for my little sister when I was in high school, but yesterday I had the pleasure of making my a dress for a little one year old girl. I didn't have a baby dress form to take measurements from, so I found a model that was comparable.

This project was one of the funnest projects I've done this year and it was a huge hit. I am getting a lot of responses on both the original dress design I did for my Etsy, baby couture dress and the pink shirt I made for mommies / aunties to match their daughter.

Birthstone Gowns to Debut

I'm truly excited about my newest line and I can't wait for you to see the designs, the beading and the work I have done to make each birthstone gown unique. Half the line was shot on Wednesday and so I will be getting more gowns done from now until September's show at the Arizona Bridal Affair. Until then, I will hold everyone in suspense and will only post the one design above, which is "Garnet" the gem for those born in the month of January.

The full "Birthstone" collection will debut at the Scottsdale Chaparral Suites on Sunday, September 26th, 2010. There will be two fashion shows 11:00am and 1:00pm, if you pre-register for tickets now you can get in for free. Eliza Magazine in Los Angeles featured my gowns! This is so exciting! I didn't think they would publish so many, but I even got a 2 page spread. My goodness, I feel like my hard work is finally paying off!

Also, I wanted to note a special thanks to one of my best friends Shannon Campbell for including my gowns in the photo shoot. Without her and her awesome industry connections and experience, I wouldn't have such great photographs and be featured in so many articles. It really does pay off to build and strengthen relationships, because you never know what kind of support a friend in the industry would bring.

Lucky for me, we are truly friends and genuine. Unfortunately, sometimes the fashion industry can be catty with not so genuine people. Both of us have shared so many of the same experiences of people who occupy their time gossiping about people who work hard. Who has time to gossip and spread maliciousness when there are gowns I want to create. : )

My new motto in life is that when I experience adversity, it's only cause to work harder and dream bigger. So to the nay sayers and the "haters," bring it on! Watch me turn your negativity into a positive experience.

Passion Never Sleeps

It would probably be a good idea to sleep after pulling an all nighter last night, but I feel something good is going to happen in my career very soon and sleep can simply wait.

I feel passion for my craft in my heart, in my bones, when I wake, before I go to sleep, in my dreams, and when I wake up in the middle of the night with a design. I love sewing beautiful gowns and I love the positive reaction I get when my clients, models, friends, family and I guess fans see my gowns. It's funny to think I have fans, but when you get an email message from someone you have never met saying that they are "fans" of my designs, I guess I must have them.

No matter what I do in life, I proceed with my heart on my sleeves and I put in my all. Greatness is never done poorly and that's why I work hard in everything I do. I suppose I get tired sometimes, but I've learned to "recharge" within reason and never let fatigue get to me for too long.

If I can say so myself, I feel like I am the luckiest and most blessed person in the world right now. Not many people can say that they have a job they work everyday and love every minute of it, have a supportive family, have a husband that would give up his own happiness to further my dreams, have in-laws that I truly love and have in-laws that love me back and most of all out of everything I have mentioned, I continue to have faith in life and humanity despite adversity.

I love my life and I would never trade it for anything!

Green to the Tea

Green to the tea, as in length and material that is. I know I am being my own spoiler by posting my newest design, but I love it! I am like a little girl at Christmas that stays up all night in anticipation and I put a lot of hard work into this gown.

I hand beaded it with emerald green beads for my new "Birthstone" line, half of the collection will be shot next week and I am super excited to show you the whole line to debut in September.

September which also happens to be my birthday month, which means the whole Birthstone line will be success, right? As you can tell I am giddy with excitement with what I am working on and as much as I hope everyone loves it, I really need to feel inspired again.

I don't know if it is because I am turning 30 in September or a combination of I was burnt out from a year worth of work for the bridal week planning and working on client orders, but I was in a sewing rut from the middle of May till the middle of July.

It's two months I could have done so much, but I was just zapped and needing to recharge. Since then I am definitely back on track and in the last 2 weeks I sewed 6 dresses for my Etsy account and for my new line. I even lost another 13 pounds in the process of finding my inspiration, I guess for now it seems like I am on my way back to the road of my fashion, business and weight goals.

"Simply Green": the design is a simple tea length gown with a green floral print on cotton and I beaded the bodice by hand. The under skirt / underlining and waist tie on is made out of a organic hemp. It really is "Green"

My Secret to Beading - shhhh - Top Secret

Ok, so it's not so top secret since I am blogging about it. But none the less, I wanted to share how I bead. Everyone has their own techniques, but I think one thing we all want is the beading to lay as flat as possible without those weird beading puckers. You know that area around the beading that looks wrinkled even though you have ironed it ten thousand times.

So, I decided to take pictures of how I bead. Again, this is how I do it and I know everyone has their own style.

Below is the dress I am making / beading, it's the newest piece I am working on for my eco-friendly line to be hopefully featured in 928 Magazine soon. : )

The material is a natural hemp and the floral print is a lightweight cotton. I love the print, but noticed one layer was too thin to make a stable wedding gown out of. So, I backed it with the thicker hemp material, which is great for beading.

If you have one layer that is thick enough, but wanted to bead you will want to use a stabilizer to either back the whole area of what you beading or if you get the tear away stabilizer you can just tear away the stabilizer from part of the dress that isn't beaded. That would be perfect for appliques.

Below are the pictures, I barely started the beading, because I don't want to give away too much before the dresses debut. But I hope you enjoy : )

The first thing I do is make sure I bead on only one layer, if you go through the lining that's when things start shifting and it will look like you have an improper fit. Linings are tricky as is, especially when wedding gowns needs to be fitted.

If you bead through the lining that's when most of the "puckering" occurs and you can photo shop all you want in photos, but if you want to sell the gown, brides / clients can be very particular about things like that.

Notice that there are a total of three layers to the bodice, I added structure to the bodice by making the hemp material as an underlining and also "self-lined" it as the lining, using the same hemp material as I used in the underlining.

The hemp material acts as the stabilizer for my beading and I just have to remember to keep the beading tight, but not too tight or lose when I sew them on. The tension of the thread when beading needs to be consistent throughout the whole process. I like to sew each bead a total of two or three times to make sure they are secure.

That is the biggest difference between machine beading and hand beading, machine beading can fall off easily, because they don't knot the threads and the machines do it at a faster pace. Hand beading may take longer, but it's sustainable because your hand made stitches will last longer than that done by a machine.

Dressing the Part

As I continue to gain confidence in my skills, business, health and overall life, I decided to start dressing the part of a "fashion designer." There is no one who will promote your business and yourself more than you, so why not promote your designs yourself.

I went out in my design (see above picture) yesterday and I got two compliments at the post office, both on the dress and my talent. Of all places, the post office. I walked up to the teller and instantly she commented how pretty the dress was and I told her I made it and someone in line behind me commented "you made that, it's a really cute print." When I left, I thanked them both and was beaming.

I suppose the next step is to let people know I can make them one to try to get orders, but I don't want to be intrusive. I figure if they were really interested they would ask. But for now I couldn't be happier with my decision to start doing some shameless self-promotion by wearing my designs out. Hopefully, no one steals the clothes right off my back, hehehe.

Waste Not Bridal Industry

I read this wonderful Waste Not article that quoted my husband (who works for the Association of Arizona Food Banks) and it reminded me of our own wedding. It's funny how you do things because if you didn't do otherwise it would be "a waste."

My husband and I did just that for our own wedding. Our wedding was definitely a hand-made wedding and we saved a lot of money in the process. As I remember we wanted to pay for everything and we paid roughly $3,000, including our attire. I should have remembered that my Filipino mom who loves to cook would have provided more than enough for our wedding, but we also wanted a catered meal for our guests who wasn't familiar with Filipino dishes.

We ended up having so much food at the end that we couldn't possibly force it all upon our guests, even though my mother insisted. Even then, we were left with about 2 trays of un-served spaghetti with the choice of Alfredo and tomato sauce, loads of salad and two different types of dressing, garlic bread sticks and about 2 trays of sheet cakes with a variety of chocolate and vanilla (the cakes were a present from my dear friend Bernice who is an excellent chef). Yes, I know this is probably making you all very hungry and since that is the case for many families, we decided to donate all the left overs.

It's funny that until I saw the Waste Not article that I never realized how something we did on our first day of marriage would be significant on our marriage now. Since my husband started working for AAFB over a year ago, we have become very passionate about hunger and how it is greatly tied to many industries.

And since I work in the bridal / fashion industry, I thought this was a great article to share. Many bridal professionals would agree that we go to many events and it's customary to provide food. Sometimes an event goes really well and there is hardly anything left over and sometimes it doesn't and there is an abundance. In my life I have been blessed with meeting people with great and diverse talents, some people come and go, but I will always remember their friendship / work. One of those special people who have blessed my life with his friendship and my career with his talents as a photographer is none other than my good friend and colleague Nikolai De Vera.

Right from the moment he emailed me about sharing his work with a fellow Filipino (I am a Filipina), I was impressed with his go-getter attitude. I even invited him to shoot an event and even when the event went sour, he had the right attitude. A positive one.

Nikolai shot some of my favorite pictures (see below) and his fun, energetic and perspective are always welcome. I guess I am writing this, because he is set to travel the world, mainly Europe and a little part of me thinks that his success will not bring him back to the U.S anytime soon. I will surely miss him, as others would for his talent, but also his friendship.

So, to Nikolai, as much as I want you to stay so we can hang out, eat great food, laugh and collaborate on projects; go out there to explore, share your gift with Europe and where ever you may end up.

Sharing the Spotlight

I wanted to dedicate this blog to two wonderful women, Shannon Campbell and Tracy Rasinski, that made my win even more special. If it wasn't for Shannon, my gown would not have been featured since she was the stylist for the fashion spread for Arizona Bride Magazine and Tracy was the awesome photographer who shot it all.

Shannon Campbell - is the best wardrobe stylist I know and will soon be represented by a major national fashion corporation. For all you fashionista's out there, if you have a photo shoot coming up Shannon should be hired and she is definitely worth the money. Not only does she style the shoot for you, she brings artistic touches to all the clothing and the accessories you may have and on top of that she is easy to work with. Arizona Bride Magazine Awarded Me Best Custom Dressmaker

I loved this picture of me and my husband, we have been married for about 7 years and together for about 10 years. He has seen my dream of being a fashion designer / business owner right from the start, we even took a college class "Owning and Operating a Small Business" together and he has been my number one fan. There is that saying "for every successful woman there was the man that tried to stop her," but in my case there was the man that helped build the foundation beneath her.

Last night was the awards ceremony for Arizona Bride Magazine and I am definitely happy with the results. I came into the party feeling neutral about the prospects of winning the award, because if I didn't win then it would lessen the disappointment. As the night moved on and I was enjoying mingling around and talking to people, the more I started wanting to win.

Emotions are funny that way, the more you try to control them the more you emote. When they called out my name, I was really surprised and instantly happy. The funny thing was I was talking to my friends at Lillian Lottie Couture, Meghan Lawlor and Jenny Pinto's store was up against me for the award as well, but it was all good since at one point I was a designer in their store. Let's call it a win, win for us all for being awesome nominees.

To say the least I am most definitely glad I won, it comes at the right moment too. For the last few weeks I have been going through almost a design depression, where I would start making a gown, but get frustrated with it and when I am frustrated I get frustrated with other aspects of my life. Being creative is my entire being, if I am not creating then I am not happy. I think this award is getting me back in line with what I need to do career wise and design wise.

Just you wait, I am going to come up with the most original, gorgeous, and luxurious line yet!

First off I was reading their bio and found out that they have a love of a Husqavarna Viking much like the love I have for my Viking 1100. Which by the way was serviced last week and sews as good as the day I got it 6 years ago.

Where was I, oh yeah, the Sewing Arts Center is a wonderful place to get your sewing supplies, but also a place to learn with the right tools. As a designer, I know that your skills are better with the tools that compliment your sewing style and tools that you are comfortable with and that's why I totally agree with the Sewing Arts Center when they say:

Just wanted to quickly blog and say congrats to Miss Michigan Rima Fakih and all the other contestants who wore white. I have noticed over the last few years that pageants and celebrities are wearing more white and I say keep doing so. They are inspiring brides all over and keeping the bridal industry going.

Just look at the group photo, you can see different variations of white dresses. If I were a bride I would be glued to these televised pageants, Oscar ceremonies, premieres, etc to see what style would inspire my wedding gown. : )

My machine

My machine is finally in the shop for a tune up and I miss it already. I am sitting by the desk it was on while I am writing this and for some reasons I am coming up with so many gown ideas for when I get it back. I even paid a rush fee, so I can have it back sooner.

It's been a long time coming for a tune up. I can't remember the last time I serviced it, it might have been since the end of 2008 and I have probably sewed about 60 gowns / projects since then.

My poor Viking Husqvarna gave me two really big clues that it was time. Today, I broke two Schmetz needles sewing felt and it started making a gargling sound. I know how to unscrew the bobbin area to clean and oil it, but I must have done it twice as much as usual in the last few weeks.

I hope to get it before the weekend, but if not I can work on beading a wedding gown I started last year and never finished. I have gown A.D.D when it comes to starting projects, I start a gown and then I dream up a new idea and I start another and so on. But I would trade being creative for anything else in the world. I live for art and creating pretty things.

Inspiration Through Movies

I am turning 30 this year and I know most women wouldn't admit their age, but I guess like my husband says "you have to embrace age." So I am embracing the big 3 zero, by just being honest with people and not hiding it.

I do have to admit I am coping with it better than I thought, but I have found myself watching more movies to keep inspired or it's more that it's a way to keep my mind off it. I just watched a cute Adam Sandler movie Bedtime Stories and I know it's for kids, but it was quite inspiring.

There was this one seen in ancient Greece that will inspire the hair to my next photo shoot. Below is the picture, but I would probably make it bigger in the back and have the curls be more smooth.

Isn't it funny how designers and artists take from the simplest of things and roll with the ideas.

RIP GenArt

With happy news, sometimes there is sad news. GenArt has halted it's operations due to the economy. The fashion organization has launched so many young designers, film makers, photographers, events and so on is no more.

I was first introduced to GenArt in 2004 when I tried out for Project Runway Season 1. I was able to meet Tim Gunn (about 3 times after that)and Mary Gehlahr, two people I respect for their dedication for the fashion industry. It saddens me that a organization with GenArt's caliber is closing it's doors, but hopefully the people who have helped it grow will continue mentoring young designers and artists.

Below are a few pictures of my bride Janet, she was a pleasure to work with and everything she bought for accessories / stationary was from Etsy. I had the pleasure to attend and everything was beautiful, original and handcrafted. (Etsy items she used for her wedding were the hair accessory, her shoe clips, invitations, place cards, and menus). Bridesmaid gowns by Alfred Angelo.

Janet was a great and a great reminder why I choose to work with brides who understand the process and appreciate the work that goes into every one my gowns. Unfortunately, I do turn down some brides down even if they are ready to put a deposit down, if I know that we are not seeing eye to eye or they just treat me like seamstress. I emphasize that I am much more than a seamstress, I design and I sketch out designs that is fitting for my brides. The best clients I ever had gave me a few ideas, but essentially trusted me to design something original and stylish, but something that really fits their personality.

(Like the most interesting man in the world says "he doesn't always drink beer, but when he does he drinks Dos Equis," I say "I don't take on every bride, but when I do they have to be cool." Hehehe

The dress I made for her is a asymmetrical one shoulder pleated bodice with a hand beaded lace applique in the mid bodice and corseted back bodice. The skirt has a chiffon over lay over a matte satin. The appliques and the lace edging on the skirt were hand cut and also hand beaded. The total hours for beading was 180 - 200 hours. I did most of the beading, but whenever my parents came over to stay they volunteered to help so I let them. : )

If my name was spelled with a dollar sign

With the fame of Ke$ha and her popular song "Tik Tok", I was wondering what my name would sound like phonetically if it was spelled with a dollar sign.

I think it would sound the same if I replaced the "z" with the dollar sign, don't you think? So, if I started my new fashion line "Jennyvi Di$on" maybe it would be wildly more popular. I'm just being silly now, but people already mispronounce my name any way, so I won't be changing my name any time soon. Especially, when the dollar sign is the newest addition of our alphabet, I don't want to wear it out just yet. That and it's a new concept and people "mis"pronounce Ke$ha's (Cesh - uh) name all the time.

Ah, the dollar sign not only used to indicate currency, but yet another thing for school teachers to explain to young kids.

Etsy project ideas continued

In the next week or so, while I finish up a couple gowns for my clients I will also be working on listing some new items for my Etsy shop. After the Scorpius Catwalk show opener on Thursday, I got a really good response from the guests and thought "what if the designs on the banners were real garments." I thought it would be a great way to visualize a gown before I actually sew it.

This one below is currently drying and I will be sewing a "ready to wear" out fit on her this week.

Paintings made with real dried flowers, I thought it was wasteful to just throw away cut flowers when they wilt. I dried them for a few days and then started adhering them to the canvas while the paint was still wet.

The paintings below were flowers from the photo shoot I did at the MADCAP Theater. Flowers were provided by Thee Wedding Warehouse / Endearing Floral Design.

A sneak peak at tonight debut

Tonight is the debut of my fashion banners, the one above is a sneak peak at them. The finished products have clothes on the figures, this was naked only because I had to let the acrylic paint dry before sewing / manipulating the fabric on the banners. I figured it was safe to post since I didn't draw in the "lady parts."

I would love to have you see my artwork displayed, this is the first time I am debuting as an artist and not so much a designer. Even though I know my clothing creations are artwork in my own artistic way - hehehe.

Bridal Emergencies

Picture: A dress that was too small in the back, the solution I did was add the corseted ties in the back and added about 4 inches.

This week I was reminded of why I exist, not only do I exist for my husband, my brothers and sisters, my parents and my friends, but exist for my skills. It's a great feeling to save the day and be able to help one my wedding gown clients.

This week, my Tucson bride calls me up 3 days before her wedding and says that one of her bridesmaids can't fit into her dress and that she will happen to drive up to Phoenix if I was available. Mind you this week I haven't had much sleep due to other projects and desperately needed to take at least half an hour to be able to operate heavy machinery (I drive a truck).

I didn't really have time, but I stepped into a Fresh and Easy for a healthy meal and I was on my way.

Sure enough we meet and the dress was at least 2- 3 sizes too small. As much as I hate un-stitching a beautiful gown (this one was an Alfred Angelo, it had to be done. Above was the solution I had come up with. The waist fit, but as much of us know that if it doesn't fit around the bust that it won't fit any where else.

The bust measurement is most likely the best way to order a dress, because that is what most women have trouble fitting. I think in this case, the store may have ordered from the waist measurement and unfortunately with 3 days, you can't order a new gown. But that's why I exist and was able to help out my bride this week. : )

It's almost the end

Not that I am complaining, but I have a few more orders and clients to finish and maybe I can finally take a vacation and get some rest. I am the type of person who wants creative freedom and it maybe about that time again where I can recharge to be able to create some more gowns.

I am also the type of person that with each project, I have to step up the game and make each collection bigger and better!

Just wait until you see the gowns I have sketched out, but since you can't wear a sketch, you will have to wait until I actually make the gowns : )

Sometimes as a designer I wonder if I am really getting through or if all my efforts to be more well-known are just not being seen or heard. I do all I can to get my name and designs out there, I think it's started to pay off. But the fact is that even when I'm famous (I was told to never say "if") that at least I am still creating and if people happen to notice my designs or take the time to tell me that all is not lost. I know I will be where I want to be both fame and fortune soon enough, but for now I find comfort in knowing that people have taken the time to include me in their blogs, tell me in person that they like my gowns and even just take the time to glance at my facebook or twitter. It will all add up to something one day soon, at least my work is out there and maybe one day be viewed by someone who can take me to super stardom. Now, where are those celebrities who need a gown made? Come on over and I will make you something gorgeous. : )

Can I say that I have enjoyed working with all my past brides! All of them had different personalities and taste, but like each gown I make all of them were unique and original. Working with brides is perfect market research for me as well, I get to see the newest trends and see exactly what brides are buying. It's definitely a win, win situation.

Working with brides also helps me develop new lines and as much as I love to get into crazy avant garde gowns, the business runs on consumers and what the consumers would actually wear. The clothes I end up selling has to be practical enough for the consumer, original for me to make it and of course always has to express a sense of style.

The good thing is I will always make the more avant garde stuff for my runway shows, so stay tuned to the Fall 2010, I have two lines inspired by "birth" and "art."

If you know what I am talking about, feel special because I've only told a handful of people about the lines I am working on.

When you don't have 30 years to reinvent yourself

In an article I read in BusinessWeek, Vera Wang says "you don't have 30 years to reinvent yourself." I started thinking about this today for some reason and really feel that if I'm going to make it in this oh so risky business of fashion that I really have work hard to create an image for myself and my company.

I don't want to wake up some day and realize that I pigeon holed myself strictly into bridal or strictly into one area of design. I love and appreciate all aspects of design, but how does one create an image that expresses creativity, that is mainstream marketable, caters to a wide demographic and most of all shows quality?

I suppose I will have to start doing a lot of research and perhaps really start hitting the pavement to get more work outside of Arizona. Maybe when wedding season is over I can really mull it over and really pin point the image I want the Jennyvi Dizon line to exude.

I have already started thinking seriously about losing the "Couture" in my company and just go with "Jennyvi Dizon" or just "Jennyvi." Sometimes couture is over used and the clothing it's connected to is far from couture. Do I want to be lumped in the "couture" category or does "Jennyvi" seem like it can be much more than that?

My Etsy project is slow going, because here in Arizona it's wedding season. But I'm sure when I have more time, I can get more things made / listed on Etsy. For now I'm enjoying my revival in fashion and I am actually excited about beading. I have come to enjoy it and enjoy many things about my career in general.

I love sometimes when I wake up excited to create something new and the feeling of knowing that the things I make are what invigorate my senses and bring me the most joy.

Sometimes I see some business owners stop doing the things that founded their business and what use to be their passion life is just now considered an income. If that ever happens to me, I might as well just stop being a fashion designer full-time and go back to working as an accounting manager crunching numbers till it makes me go insane.

To me, I have no life unless I have fashion. I am loveless without design. I am unhappy without creation. I have nothing if I don't have passion and I am dead if I'm not a fashion designer.

"Little Women" Patterned Retro Dress - Listing 8 / 365

My newest creation is done! In the middle of 2 wedding gowns this week, I finally put the finishing touches to this dress. The great thing it's not bridal or evening and so hopefully it will sell as a sun dress. It's cotton and so it would be perfect for summer, especially in Arizona it will keep you cooler than other fabrics that tend to stick to your skin when you sweat.

These are French seams, it's my favorite seam to do because there is no frayed edges any where. In the next week or so stay tuned and I will post how to do them. As you can see it looks so much better than the normal 5/8" seam allowance.

Oscar Night Gowns - OMG Sandra!

This is a perfect example of how an Oscar Award winner can mean many things, for Sandra Bullock her best actress win is also a win for that gorgeous gown. For me the look is sexy without being obvious and the beading is perfectly done and not overwhelming.

I can also see this gown translate into a wedding gown and I already have so many ideas. I love when celebrities wear their best, because that means many women are inspired to wear prettier gowns, especially on their big day.

I have worked with several clients who have come to me with pictures of celebrities asking me to incorporate at least one or two themes from the celebrity look into their wedding gown.

To all the famous ladies, I say please continue to inspire us : ).

How to sew an invisible zipper

As I am sewing a cute little dress for my Etsy project, I thought I would share my love of matching seams especially with zippers. There is nothing more satisfying knowing my seams are aligned.

I had already sewn the other side of the zipper with a zipper foot, so the picture below is taking the front bodice (zipper already sewn to it) and matching the back bodice to where the other side of the zipper needs to be sewn.

Pins are great, they are like tiny little helper hands and so once I have placed the front bodice on top of the back bodice I pin in place the zipper (which is closed and attached to the front bodice) to the back bodice.

Once I have pinned, I can open up the zipper, careful not to unpin the one pin I put in. Now I can pin the rest of the zipper in place and once the rest of the pins are in, I can adjust the original pin so it's not upside down when we sew.

I like to have the needle down when I sew, so the fabric doesn't move when you stop. My machine has a feature where it is automatically down at all times without turning the hand wheel to do so.

Notice the pins when they are horizontal to the zipper makes it easier to open up the coil and so you can make sure you are sewing the zipper close to the coil but not on it. If you sew the coil part of the zipper, it will not close. A good rule of thumb is to sew away from the coil at least a 1/16" and not more than an 1/8" of an inch.

And oooh look the seams match!

Now we have sewn the zipper, but what about the rest of the seam.

Close the zipper and find the stitches where at the end of the zipper. Gently move the zipper (to the right), just enough so it will not be sewn and pin.

Move the needle to the other side of the zipper foot and sew on top of the last stitches (back stitch always not more than 3 back stitches). This is where you want to make sure the zipper is out of the way but careful moving it too much to the right will cause a pucker on the other side.

And voila, the zipper and the seam are finished and all it needs is a little pressing.

There's plenty of time, right?

I officially have to start making stuff so I can reach my goal of 365 listings before next March, but don't worry I have plenty of ideas and I'm hopeful. Well, at least I'm telling myself that. No, I really am.

I just have been busy with about 3 custom wedding wedding gowns, all that have to be beaded and since it is just me, I have to stay up to get things done. No worries, I will be back on track with my goals come Monday.

I know I am making time for this project, because I love competing with myself and in a way I just want something to really accomplish since I'm not this big super star designer just yet. It's almost my "beacon of light" to help me stay focused and to feel like I am making a difference in my career.

I only hope that my career is moving forward and someone out there sees my potential. Or I win the lottery and all my problems will be solved and I can really invest in my fashion future. I guess the odds of that happening are zilch, since it has been years since I have even bought one of those scratchers tickets.

Only time will tell, I just hope the phrase I always say "one day" will turn into "omg, it's finally here."

Sequined Organza Shawl with Scalloped Edge (Listing #7)

The awesome part about this listing is that when I was draping the blue silk on my dress form to hide my design lines (when draping patterns on the form), I thought of a new design as I was doing it. Perhaps, it was also because I was watching an inspiring documentary on Frank Lloyd Wright and that he was working until the day he died.

I only hope that I will do the same, I cannot imagine a life without creating or sketching something on a daily basis. If I stop that means there must be something wrong with me.

Inventory Shock

Now that I listed my first 6 items for sale, I decided to look into my inventory to see what else I can list and realized that most of my inventory is not for sale. Not for sale for many reasons, the main two reasons being that some of them have sentimental value and the other is that I have inventory that I consider "easy runway."

I suppose I have to sew / craft more to make my goal, which I knew was going to happen, but I thought I had a lot more in stock that would buy me some time. Maybe, I can look at my gowns and see which ones I can part with and which ones will continue to take up space on the 4 racks of clothes I have in the corner of my master bedroom.

I think it's funny that I don't often think that I am a materialistic person, but when it comes to the things I've made I sure am protective over them. Maybe it's the Virgo in me or maybe I am a lot more sentimental than I thought.

So, I guess I will have to think long and hard before I list anything and so it may have to wait till tomorrow. Maybe I can make a quick hair accessory or one of my "fashionable aprons." Stay tuned, I can whip something up.

My Etsy Project

A few weeks ago I met with my bride, which I call my "Etsy" bride because she absolutely loves hand made items. She suggested that I should really get on Etsy, because she was sure there are other brides like herself on there.

So, last night I posted my first two items for sale and I have decided to list or at least try to list 365 listings in a years time. I know it seems really ambitious, but I just watched the movie "Julie and Julia" and so I think if Julie was able to cook all of Julia Child's recipe's then I can list 365 items that I have made before March 1st, 2011.

To tell you the truth it sounds a little intimidating and the potential of selling all of them seems like a dream, but hopefully I can keep it up and watch my business grow even more : ). Especially, in the near future I will be taking pictures of my projects and describing the inspiration / the how to aspects of each Etsy project.

How to Pitch

I don't know how to pitch a curve ball, but I know how to pitch ideas to reporters, magazines, and bloggers.

The best ways I can ever pitch to reporters and media in general is to get to the point and use exciting verbiage. They say for every business owner that you should be able to describe your business or what you do in one sentence and that is always helpful when you are introducing yourself to a reporter or blogger and then you can go into details once you have intrigued them.

Another factor when responding is to give them other story angles, but make sure it pertains to what they usually write about. For example, I wouldn't want to pitch another story about finance, if they were looking for the latest and greatest bridal gown idea.

Below is a sample response from me to lets say a fashion editor:

Dear Miss Fashion,

I am a fashion designer who has been an avid fan of your magazine for several years and I'm writing to you to tell you about my newest collection. In this new collection, I know you will fall in love with the vibrant colors, the luminous sheen and the amazing texture of the fabrics we choose. Every gown is detailed with hand beading (not machine) and the attention to every detail is immaculate, especially since each gown was made by an individual here in the United States was not sewn in a factory. Everything was made in my studio by either me or trained colleagues with years of experience.

Sometimes Not Feeling Well is Good

I wasn't feeling well this morning. It may have been a combination of working too much and maybe trying to do really well on my diet, but being the eternal optimist I took the down time while I was in bed to re-evaluate my goals and change some things.

I think it's always good to re-visit your goals and resolutions and change things that doesn't work for you anymore. The things that have worked in the past may have worked because you were younger or in a different mind set and I realized that my diet goals are much more long term than when I was 20 and trying to fit into my skinny jeans. Back then I was wanting to starve myself for a couple weeks and keep off the weight for a month and then gain them all back again.

Now, I am making healthy choice and trying to avoid the health issues I have seen in my older friends and even in my parents. And I know it may be silly, but I think I may have not been feeling well because I harbor a lot of guilt for not being able to do my normal "Lent Give-up" (no beef, pork or poultry and cheese). But I simply can't drive myself insane and worry about stuff when I am technically giving up weight for Lent.

As my husband puts it, it took me years to put on the weight and I can't expect to lose all of it in a few weeks.

I think being unwell in this case was great and it was nice to take the time to think today. I even set some fashion goals that I will be working on soon and I will post pictures as I get more sewn. : )

Out on a rainy night and loving it!

There are not too many nights here in Arizona that you can prowl while it's raining and so my husband and I did. We went to Maizie's and how perfect was it that it was $3.00 burger night and for a dollar more you can upgrade your fries to the sweet potato kind. All I can say is nummy!

I was already taking a break for my mental health and it was a perfect evening to be by the light rail, enjoy happy hour, good food and even meet new people. It feels almost like real big city living in Uptown Phoenix.

So, now I am home and feel like working even though I told myself I was going to take a breather today, but when you feel motivated why not? It's nights like this that make working fun and who knows maybe I will get a gown done tonight. That and I did my hair and why waste a perfectly good hair day going to sleep (hehehehe).

Lazy Sunday with Norman Greenbaum

Today I slept in and it felt great to. Surprisingly, my husband woke up 2 hours before I did and since music is very much a part of our lives for those two hours I was slipping in and out of my dream state to music of Fleet Foxes and Steve Malkmus and the Jicks. Then when I was eating breakfast trying to wake up we decided to listen to Norman Greenbaum and listening to "Spirit in the Sky," really wakes you up, but not in an abrupt kind of way.

I have come to enjoy Sundays, for a long time now I really try not to do go out or schedule appointments on Sundays and I feel refreshed and better for that decision. It also makes Mondays a lot more bearable. : )

So, I wish everyone a happy Sunday whatever you end up doing. For me, I will be enjoying this wonderful rainy weather and dreaming of my move to Seattle whenever that may be. Hopefully sooner than later, but for sure not for several more years.

The mind works in mysterious ways

Sometimes it's so odd for me to realize that most of my ideas and my current work schedule are at it's peak between midnight and 3am. Perhaps this may be a reason why I decided to work for myself and myself only.

I have never been comfortable with routine, when I find myself sticking to the same work schedule I find myself restless. Maybe most creative minds work this way and I'm more normal than I think. I am however trying to regularly get in about 8 hours of work a day, but even that doesn't really work for me. I find myself always planning and mapping things out during dinner, when I am suppose to be relaxing, watching TV, in the shower, in the car and pretty much wherever I am. It's enough to make me go wild sometimes, I call my thought process "Organized Chaos."

Sometimes when I clean my room I tend to forget where I put things away and when my room is in shambles I know where everything is. I even keep all my fabric scraps in bags by prints or color in hopes that I will have enough time to create some spectacular gown with bits and pieces of fabrics I have used to make other gowns. I may have enough scraps for a whole line (I am now listing possible line names).

I am just surprised how the mind works sometimes, brains are unique things to have and it's funny to think we are not even using 100% of them.

Living, Breathing, and Feeling Fashion

Isn't it amazing how some years seem endless and others seem like it has passed you by. This year it seems like it's moving amazingly fast for me. I think it maybe that I have finally found my fashion groove, keeping busy on a daily basis and just completely surrounding myself in anything fashion.

It seems like I have been divulging in my own fashion fantasy of making very avant garde pieces and looking forward to creating more from my dreams. I have been dreaming up more designs lately and ideas seem to be flowing much more easily these last few months.

It's a great thing to be inspired and sometimes good for my soul to escape into my dreams. Sometimes when I wake up from day dreaming, I feel so refreshed and it helps me work so much better than when I don't.

I feel like my dream world started once it hit 2010. I feel much more happier and much more carefree for some reason. Maybe it's because I released 30 pounds and physically I feel lighter or maybe since I am turning 30 in September, this is my way of holding on to my youth. Whatever it is, I love it! I have never wanted anything so much in my life and this year I am doing everything I can to work 10 times harder.

Perhaps that's why I just found out that Alexander McQueen died and feel horrible that I didn't say my prayers for him earlier. Prayers to his mother, to him and most of all prayers for his loved ones.

A new way to "shred"

I can't shred on a guitar, but boy can I shred fabric and have fun creating something other than wedding gowns. : ) My photographer friend Nikolai, wanted some "raw" pieces for a shoot and this is what we came up with : ).

It was totally fun, but more time consuming and more ear piercing than I originally thought. Some of the nylon / polyester fabric is quite noisy.

I suppose since I am in the bridal industry, I should honor this day with a Valentine's Day post. I know most couples engaged today and even try to get married on this day, which only makes me happier when they consider a gown hand made by me. : )

Today, I am spending a relaxing day with my husband of over 6 years and we are celebrating our 9th Valentine's Day together. I remember our first Valentines together, we had just moved to Colorado Springs 2 months earlier and it was the first time we were constantly in snow. On that particular day, it was -7 and easily the coldest Valentine's Day we had ever had.

At least we had time to experience much warmer romantic days like today. I love to cook and a day at home will win over long restaurant lines. I know I should relax, but it seems that I am fine sewing today, something I also love : ).

Posture or some weird form of torture?

As I get booked with more bridal orders and projects, I find myself sewing a lot more than I am use to. Unfortunately, it takes a toll on my back and my overall posture. So, I decided to do what they use to do back in the old days to improve posture by placing a bar behind my back and holding it in place for about 20 minutes a day.

After I do it I really am conscious of how I am sitting and you can really tell if you are slouching. I only wish I had done these exercises before I got married, sometimes I look at the pictures and think maybe I would have looked better in them. I heard somewhere that good posture makes you look thinner and I can definitely see how it may improve someones overall look.

The great thing about this exercise is that you definitely feel that you have to stand up or move around. I tried sitting and doing the exercise and I got really impatient. I end up putting some high energy music and doing some aerobic exercise, it's almost like killing two birds with one stone.

The Great Ring Debate

To redesign or not?

I have been trying to decide if it is worth getting my engagement ring and wedding ring redesigned into one ring. I love them both and I wear them both, but as you can see my engagement has 2 bands. I guess the whole idea behind my engagement ring was to mold the separate gold band to the one that has the diamond when you got married, but because like many other girls I wanted a different wedding ring.

So, technically I wear 3 rings that remind me of my hubby. Should I redesign? Some of my concerns are if it's worth it or if the cost of the redesign can buy me another ring altogether and there is another issue. The other issue is that whenever I look at my engagement ring it reminds me of the day I got it.

Since my proposal wasn't romantic at all, the moment I got the engagement ring was. When I got engaged, we were living in Colorado Springs and two weeks before I accidentally proposed to my husband. I am not much of a drinker, but the job I had at the time made me and being in higher elevation didn't help either.

We were out with a good friend of mine and also met up with more friends in the downtown area. After 9 shots (I didn't drink beer at the time) I was practically crawling on the floor. I remember getting into his truck and just randomly started talking about marriage, probing if we were ready to get married or if we were even interested. Long story short, he said yes.

The next morning he had asked me if I remembered what I said to him and initially, I was so scared to hear his answer that I said a long nonchalant "Nooooo, why" and responded with "well, if you remember the answer is yes" and then I said a long "yeeeesssss." So, that's how we were engaged and we weren't really prepared to be engaged and I told him that I can use one of my rings from my jewelry collection as my engagement ring.

Two weeks go by and I honestly kept forgetting to wear my so called engagement ring and I was having a harder time at work. My now fiance picks me up from work and we go to our favorite restaurant the Pikes Peak Brewery. I found it weird that my hubby would let me hold his hand or let me hug as close as I was use to while sitting next to each other.

The waiter leaves and my hubby takes a ring box from his pocket and presents me with my engagement ring. A couple next to us tells our waiter that we just got engaged and the waiter asked if we did. We said yes, because he offered us free cheesecake and who are we to say no to free cheesecake.

Well, after all that I think I have my answer. : )

Thanks to my super model Rachel Niu, I was able to snag a couple real copies of the USA Today article I was interviewed for. I wasn't aware that it would come out a day after the Super Bowl and I thought it was perfect timing! (I think many football fans like myself would have picked a copy)

I couldn't ask for a more perfect Monday to start the work week, so many acquaintances and even family members in other states have wished me well after seeing it, but I had the chance to read the whole article and it is definitely worth the read.

It really puts a lot of perspective on credit cards and how some people view them as a credit trap. It's harder to buy a car if you don't have credit and how do you initially get credit? You apply for credit cards, but once you use them and think that you can pay off the balance and don't you accumulate debt, debt that gets many people in trouble.

That's why I completely stopped using them altogether and it is the most rewarding decision that I ever made. Now it's time to aggressively pay off those balances, much like some of the people in the article. The article completely inspired me to start rethinking about the things I have already bought. A married couple decided to sell off everything to travel and not use their cards and I started thinking about trading in my my vintage jewelry / purse collection to have money to travel more without putting it on a credit card.

So, I set up my Etsy account and I just have to get it going and sew more dresses to sell too : ).

Channeling Rebecca from Confessions of a Shopaholic

Sometimes a girl has got to shake herself from making those wild unnecessary impulse buys, but for me it only really takes watching Confessions of a Shopaholic to muster some really good ideas about spending and savings.

As you end your first month of trying to fulfill those new year resolutions, you have to look at your list and think "wow, what a drag." Well, at least I did and decided to make some dollars and sense out of it all with a new game that keeps me on track of my health / diet, work schedule, my beauty routine and of course my savings.

I'm sure savings is high on everyone's list right now and sometimes it's really challenging to save. I think if I play my game right, I know that by the end of the year I will be skinny enough to wear my runway clothes, have booked a ton of clients, look younger than I have ever before and maybe just maybe padded up my savings account.

Okay, okay, I will get to the rules / example of the game already.

Pick your resolutions / categories:

Mine were:
Losing Weight
Being More Productive
Maintaining My Beauty Routine
Saving Money

Others might be:
Keeping a cleaner house
Getting Started on Wedding / Event Planning
Booking More Sales
Eating Healthier
Start Exercising

Starting your goal list:

You will want to do this for each resolution / category.

You will want to pick out your 3 major activities to be able to make your goal and about 5-7 sub-activities that you will need to do to be able to attain the 3 major ones. Put a higher dollar amount for the 3 major activities and a lower dollar amount for the sub-activities.

Here is an example:

Reward yourself $10.00 for these doing these activities:

- For every pound lost
- For making your weekly weight goal
- For jogging 4-5 miles

Reward yourself $5.00 for these doing these activities:

- Keeping calories under 1200
- Walking for exercise
- 25 push ups
- 25 sit ups / ab exercises
- 25 staircase sets (walking / running up and down stairs is one set)
- 50 jumping jacks
- 50 minutes of aerobic exercise

**This game requires that you have to be honest with yourself, but once you do you will be surprised how things on your list starts to become second nature. Also, you want to avoid a 3rd dollar amount, it gets too complicated and it's harder to track.

Keeping Track:

I keep a notebook to keep track of my diet, work schedule, and beauty routine. When I have made a goal I write down how much to put in my savings account right next to the goal.

For my diet / health savings game, I have to separate that account from my work savings. I like to do this, so I can see which one I am doing better at. But if you don't want to open up a new account, just use your savings account.

I do weekly deposits and keep a running total and deposit the money on the same day a week, which is (weigh day)Wednesday. You can do yours daily if you it's easier for you. For me, I only weigh myself once a week, so I don't get disappointed if I don't see results every day.

**The next section is where the game gets challenging and perhaps even fun.

Making a list of the habits that deter you away from your goal:

You will want the same amount as your goal list.

List 3 major bad habits that hinder you from your attaining your goal and about 5-7 sub-activities that. Put a higher dollar amount for the 3 bad habits and a lower dollar amount for the sub-activities.

Here is my example:

Subtract $10.00 for these bad habits / deterrents:

- For every pound gained
- For not making goal
- For eating more than 2,000 calories

Subtract $5.00 for these bad habits / deterrents:

- Eating more that 1,500 calories
- Not exercising at least 3 times a week
- Eating more than 800 calories in one single meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
- Adding sugar to coffee
- Eating out
- Eating junk food / candy
- Eating regular salad dressings and not choosing the low fat / reduced calorie

**I would love to know if you plan to start the game with me, I find that playing along or challenging someone else really helps stay motivated. And sometimes it's fun challenging yourself, but what I have noticed is that you start to see a change in how you view certain things.

The great part is that you can tailor the goals and list to your needs and start seeing the results. For example, I will look at adding sugar to my coffee and think "that's minus $5.00 from my savings account" and will think twice about doing it. I guess this game is almost like those weight loss programs that have a point system, but the fun part is you are saving more money by not paying to be in a program.

The new Jenny for the new year!

Over the past 5 months I have made several changes to both my mental and physical health. It hasn't been easy, especially with the fact that I have been the heaviest I have ever been in my whole entire life.

I realized that I needed to change last August and since then I have been feeling the happiest I have ever been. It's funny how you can come full circle after a short period of time, but so far I have lost 25 pounds. Actually, I like to say "release." After my good friend Sheila said that when you lose something, eventually you find it. So, I never want to find that weight ever again!

I honestly see changes in my mental health as well. I am more confident and I acknowledge my accomplishments, rather than focus on the negative of my past experiences. I think it's great that my weight "release" has led to more positive experiences in my life. It seems that there are opportunities that I didn't see when I was more self-conscious and heavier.

It goes to show that once you decide to change your body image, you also change your mental image of yourself as well. And at the end of the day you get to enjoy who you are and be proud of the positive changes in your life.

I hope everyone commits to at least one of their New Year's Resolutions, because once you do one, it's hard to stop. : )

Last blog of the year and the decade!

I can't believe that a whole decade has gone by so fast and at least my only regret is that I didn't take more pictures. As many of you know I am a little camera shy on a personal level, but on a business level take as many as you want! But as the new year approaches and the old one is about to end in about 12 hours, I reflect on what I have learned this year, the good experiences and the experiences I learned from (I don't believe in bad experiences, but see that they are always learning experiences), and most of all the new traditions I will carry over to 2010.

One of my new traditions that I have learned to love is jogging. I have lost over 20 pounds this year and I plan to continue eating healthy and maintain the work out schedule I have already conditioned myself to do. Another new tradition is continue to be in control of my spending and my work schedule. Last and not least, I will continue to forgive people have not been nice to me in the past. Forgive their actions and forgive the way they have unjustly treated me. This doesn't mean they are welcome back in my life by all means, but more that I have stopped thinking about their cruelty and moved on from people who treat others like they are nothing. I may be a nice person, but I'm a nice person who won't let anyone control my actions, especially if it means hurting other people. : )

Anyways, I decided to do something fun, so I listed every year in the decade and listed my most memorable memories.

2000 - Went to New York, visited the house that Ruth built and bought my very first car a brand new Volkswagon Jetta.

2001 - Had an anxiety attack at my job as Senior Sales Auditor and quit shortly after, met my now husband at my new job and moved to Colorado Springs.

2002 - Got engaged, moved to Tucson and started planning my wedding.

2003 - Got married. moved back to Phoenix and started my fashion career.

2004 - Had my very first show in Beverly Hills and talked to some celebrities : ), won the Labelhorde People's Choice Fashion Designer of the Year award.

2005 - Bought my first house

2006 - Won FGI's (Fashion Group International) Rising Star Award for Apparel Design and Arizona's Fashion Foundation's Designer of the Year Award and got my doggie Dodger.

2007 - Voted "Best of" for Custom Bridal Design by the Phoenix New Times.

2008 - Celebrated my 5th year wedding anniversary.

2009 - Officially a full-time business owner and launched the Arizona Bridal Week.

The live mannequin models will line the street in a rotating fashion show, displaying the creations of a different fashion or accessories designer every hour. This collaboration will be a match made in color! D'Lisa and Company will glamorize the beautiful live mannequin models with beautiful makeup creations. A local set will include custom fashions created by Zoe and Jennyvi Dizon Couture.

Fashion In Motion is an ongoing live mannequin modeling showcase which incorporates each individual venue's setting and adapts the stage around the space. The runway is made up of a series of 6 platform boxes. The models rotate on each box every 10 minutes until all 6 boxes have been utilized. Many thanks to the 1 Voice LGBT Community Center for putting on one of the best events I have ever been involved in! That says a lot too, having produced fashion shows for 6 years and being numerous fashion shows including Scottsdale Fashion Week and even my own Arizona Bridal Week. Everyone worked so hard on this event to the point where our health might have suffered, myself included which says how important this event was!

For me, I wanted to show my support of the LGBT community, especially being in the bridal industry. Never have I felt so welcome by a group of wonderful people, they were so accommodating to me and welcomed me like I was family. It's amazing how much applause I heard and how much support I felt from just the audience itself.

I am glad to be a proud supporter of 1 Voice and I can honestly not say enough about the venue, the well planned event and all the people involved. Perhaps it should be called LGBTS (to include us straight people who love all people) : ).

There was not one piece I didn't want for myself and a testament to her work my husband who has seen as many of my fashion shows took an interest in her designs and it was the first time he asked about buying a couple! Simply amazing jewelry!

Shannon Campbell - Amazing wardrobe stylist who just scored a photo shoot with the infamous Italian Vogue! Congrats girl, it was an honor to be able to work together. BTW - her website is one of my favorites to visit she works everyday (seriously) and she so many great photo shoots that I get inspired!

Kensington Makeup Artists - much love to Holli Christiansen's team for pulling off awesome work! When Kali puts together a team, she really puts out the best work possible! I think the hardest part about the show was making the looks work for all three time period themes (18th Century, 50's and Futuristic). Sure enough they executed splendidly. They also did my hair which made me feel pretty : )

Monique Verdin - She was able to do make-up on many of the people involved with the event, including myself and she is always easy to work with and amazingly quick! She even helped me before the show which saved a lot of time and stress. : )

Aaron McGloin Dance (AMD) - This truly was an inspirational performance, I really enjoyed watching them dance during rehearsal and now I want to see more! It was so fun designing for Aaron's dancers, because it made me think outside my normal design process. I love creating the themed looks that the dancers can move in without losing elements of my own taste and style.

SIM Models - Aimee and Molly always sends me the most upbeat and professional girls! I am not going to lie I have my favorites Rachel Niu (and her sister is a SIM model too) Britnee Johnson and Stephanie Mannon, this power trio is a force to be reckoned with! I would not be surprised if they were walking in Olympus Fashion Week, they are always on time, take direction very well, always professional and most importantly always so sweet.

Katie Kolesar - who was one of our dressers who stepped in at just the right time. I don't know what I would have done if she wasn't backstage helping out. I would have completely lost my mind! She even writes for the Examiner - check out her column

First, I would love to thank Shannon Campbell for working so hard on this flyer! I love it and I am so going to post it everywhere! But I cannot say enough about the 1 Voice team, they have worked so hard to make this years gala event the best yet and when they asked me to produce the fashion portion of the event I couldn't resist! Especially when it meant being the opener for a huge designer like Andrew Christian, I really feel this will be my big break!

But with good news comes not so good news. I have to say with the work I put into the Arizona Bridal Week and this show, this will be the last show of this year and perhaps the last show until the next fall. I am just really focus on sewing and trying to break into bigger markets and trying hard to be in stores.

Producing fashion shows are fun for sure, but its very hard work and takes a lot of time. Time I am wanting to devote more into my designs, my inventory and perhaps traveling out of the state to secure some accounts : )

Do you ever get the feeling that something good is going to happen? I guess that's the fun of life is not knowing what good things are coming your way!

But now that I made this huge announcement - hehehe, please make the effort to come to the show. I made the dance costumes for the 18th century and the futuristic themes and of course my designs are featured in the runway show along with my good friend Alex Garcia with his line AGA Couture, fellow award FGI Rising Star award winner Beth Church showcasing her jewelry and the headlining designer Andrew Christian.

I cannot tell you how excited, nervous, giddy, and blessed I feel at this very moment! I am to the point where I have put my all in both my line and the Arizona Bridal Week that I feel it needs to happen now, so I can plan accordingly for next year : ).

I have complete confidence that all 8 days will go better than expected and that it's going to be one of those events that people can look forward to attending year after year. I am just so happy that all the vendors and venues I have worked with are the most professional, kind, organized and if I can say so the best in their industry!

I could have not done any of this without them!

It may be a while till I blog, so I hope to see you at the events.

Amazing Generosity From Bashas and Their Patrons!

What a rewarding birthday for me! It was definitely worth waking up at 5:30am in the morning with my husband Brian Simpson with the Association of Arizona Food Banks to trek over to the Bashas' in Chandler to see that they are still so generous in this current economic situation.

And it was great to see several Bashas' patrons donate food and school supplies while we there. I cannot say enough about how amazing people are! It's so great to see that the spirit of giving is alive and strong in our great Arizona state and how lucky we are.

I do have to admit it was fun watching Bruce Hafner do a live TV segment. There was even a lady who came up to him after the segment to tell him that she has been a fan for several years. I hope someday I will get to the point of celeb status. But I guess for now my birthday wish other than world peace is that people do what they can to support local businesses and organizations.

I personally love shopping local, you get to know so many people and who you get to know and then in turn supports you. : )

Birthday Wishes!

For some reason, I am actually excited about my birthday. It has been years since I have, it may be a combination of I am giving myself a day off or that the Arizona Bridal Week is about a week and a half away. Either way, as I approach the age of 29 I can't see myself doing anything else or working for anyone else as well.

I really do feel blessed to be doing what I love to do and feel like I can finally do good in the world with my companies by doing all that I can to raise money for charities through my events and through my bridal gown line.

I only hope that all the hard work that everyone has put into the Arizona Bridal Week will be worth it for all involved. I am really confident it will, but with doubt I always have a plan B. It's almost like playing a complex game of chess, with one action you have to be prepared for multiple reactions.

All in all, I hope you all understand if I take a little break from my work to wake up early for the Bashas Food Drive tomorrow in Chandler and do something good to make my happy birthday even happier : )

You decide! Ghost or No Ghost

I just got back the cd from the Wrigley Mansion shoot from Kym Ventola. I love them all, but there is one picture that concerns me. This picture is absolutely stunning, but if you notice her shadow there is an orange reflection behind her.

I have had this kind of light appear in my pictures before personally and close to when someone had died. The first time this has happened was when I took a picture of an ex-boyfriend in the car and right in front of his face in the picture was an orange / reddish light. It wasn't a figure or anything, but in the car I was in the passenger seat and he was driving and the light was in between like if someone we to sit between us that was where the light was. Anyway, a month before my ex-boyfriend's grandpa had died.

The 2nd picture that it had appeared in was when I had taken a photograph of me in the side view mirror while again I was in the car and there was a orange / reddish light that appeared. My aunt had passed away 3 weeks prior.

So, tell me what you think? It's an odd shape for a shadow or reflection and my uncle died a couple months ago. I guess if it's my loved ones in those pictures, maybe they were saying hello and so, if I were to greet them now I would say "Mahal Ko Kita and I miss you very much and I hope you are finally enjoying yourself up in heaven" : )

Wrigley Mansion Shoot was awesome!

Yesterday, I finished probably the hardest shoot thus far. It was probably a combination of I was sick or that I was sick and running a fever Tuesday night while trying to finish up 2 gowns for the shoot and I got only four hours of sleep. It was all worth it for the shots that my official photographer was able to capture. If anyone is need of photography I highly recommend Kym Ventola of Ventola Photography. I always say how much fun she is to work with and she is so good with brides! It's remarkable how far her personality can win people over, she is such a gem. I am so lucky to know her, be friends with her and most of all work with her for such gorgeous ad worthy photos.

A lot has happened in the last few weeks, I've learned a lot about my strengths and a lot about dealing with people. Clients mainly, but also about building relationships that will help me in the future and setting processes in place that will help avoid any complications.

I do want to say that the planning for my side project the Arizona Bridal Week is going really well, I have learned that one of my strengths is connecting with people and talking to people candidly about my work and the passions that keep me motivated. I cannot say enough about constantly networking and constantly being on the phone. I think I am definitely to the point where I will need help with sewing on a more regular basis to start growing my company to where it needs to be (which is on a national level).

I know I can do it, just stay tuned : )

Fits a size 6 - 8 ish, but please read the description, it can fit women with a 29-31" waist.

Inspired from Amsale's Reese gown, the client I made this for couldn't pay for the rest of her balance and so I am trying to do the right thing and get her deposit back for her. I hand made this gown myself and can tell you everything you need to know about it, including how the fabric we picked out is suited well for traveling since it is a man-made fabric, it doesn't wrinkle like silk does. The fabric is a diamond white faille fabric that is crisp and light, perfect for an out door wedding. The train measures out 3 ft and underneath is a light layer of tulle. The bodice is a heart shaped spaghetti strap halter with hand-beaded rhinestones attached to the back to create "back bling" a feature that adds a little sparkle while your guest sit and watch. There are even pockets, so you can carry small items around with you. The bodice has a built in bra, so you don't have to spend endless hours searching for one. This gown is really versatile, since it is backless it can fit any measurement and can fit up to a small C cup depending how much cleavage you comfortable with. Since it is a halter you can make it more empire waisted or lower, depending on the look you are going for. The waist measures roughly 29”-30”(depending where your waist hits compared to my mannequin), so that is the only real requirement of the dress, other than that any girl can wear the dress.
The dress is very clean, it was tried on by my client only 2 or 3 times and shot professionally once and worn for 10 to 15 minutes tops. The inside of the gown is underlined with organza and lined with the same fabric I used for the dress and sewed it with French seams.

Hopefully, you know what movie reference that was if not you can always email me : ). I just wanted to quickly recap on my wonderful experience at the Thee Wedding Warehouse yesterday. I came there not knowing what to expect, but all in all I came away with some great products, some solid leads and a lot of great business ideas.

For the first time yesterday I sat down with several brides and sketched a design based from their ideas, concerns, likes and dislikes. Normally, I sketch in a private setting, but the brides didn't mind and so began my normal process of interviewing the bride.

I started thinking about it throughout the day, but I may be doing a lot more sketching at bridal shows. It seemed like the brides really appreciate my advice and the dress designs I created for them. Even if the bride had bought their dress, she came home with a nice sketch of her dress and I even offered up creating a sketch for them if they had wanted one with their likeness in the gown she was going to wear on her wedding day.

A little present from me and even the bride doesn't go to me for a custom gown, at least they will remember me for my suggestions and have a sketch for their scrapbook. : )

Overall, it was a great day for me and I think the girls (Kathy and Jacque) at the Thee Wedding Warehouse really do care for all their clients and vendors. They are wonderful people to know and I think they created a harmonious environment for both the brides and vendors. Not to mention the store itself is great for a wonderful shopping experience.

As most of you know I am producing the first Arizona Bridal Week and I am getting to the point where if I don't organize, I may drop the ball. So I bought somethings that are regularly for brides to organize their wedding ideas, but I found it was perfect for me to organize for planning the bridal week as well.

I got a response box that has two sections inside it one for the yeses and one for the no's that I can use to sort who is involved and who is not. A Cute little tote that is organized in sections for floral, music, gowns, etc and I got file folders with the same tabs. I know for sure I am going to be organized and know where everything should go in style. : )

A Labor of Love

I totally understand this completely right now, all I want to do is work on my new line inspired by Marie Antoinette and the Pink Ribbon for breast cancer awareness. I find myself working on a client projects, which obviously is good for business and my lively hood. But it's almost like I am back in school wanting to go home and sew.

Where the agony of sitting in class is costing you time in creating the designs you have in your head. Thankfully, I have my whole line sketched out, so I don't lose out on the ideas when it is time to sew (hopefully soon).

But perhaps this is just telling me that if I want to produce the line bad enough, I have lose sleep to do it. Which I don't mind, I can't sleep so well anyways : )
